Stone Anchors (09A14)

These four stone anchors were recovered from Fort Bovisand after spending many years under the stairs leading to the bar. The anchors are believed to have been recovered from between the inshore and offshore Coronation sites sometime before 1995.

The blue slate anchor was analysed at the University of Plymouth and its not a distinctive type, coming from a geological sequence that runs across Cornwall, part of Devon, across Brittany to the northern coast of Spain. The slate could also come from parts of Belgium or Germany but there is a local outcrop in Jennycliff Bay on the east of Plymouth Sound.

Anchor 09A14_3 was donated to the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth, in February 2014.
