3 Hole Stone Anchor (10A12)
This stone anchor was recovered from near Battery Buoy in Plymouth Sound, different from most of the others found in the area as it has three holes through it and is made from basalt. There are local outcrops of this basalt on Drakes Island and in parts of West Cornwall.
The anchor may what Honor Frost describes as a 'rock anchor', a simple stone weight anchor which would hold on a rocky seabed, or a 'sand anchor' where two of the three holes were fitted with wooden pegs that would dig in to the seabed.
See 10A11 for details about other stone anchors.
