Rudder Pintle (09A03)

Found off Rame Head, possibly from the wreck of the Taxiarchos (1843) as other objects from this wreck have been found in the same area. The copper alloy pintle is in good condition except for one strap which has a section missing.

The pintle pin is 242mm long, 50mm diameter at the base tapering to 40mm at the rounded end. The strap is 60mm thick at the base of the pin tapering to 15mm thick on each arm. The starboard arm is shorter at 423mm than port side 576mm, the starboard strap is missing 160mm length broken of at the second bolt hole. Four 25mm diameter bolt holes are in the port side strap and only two are in the starboard. No markings or inscriptions can be seen.
