Deck Light (12A27)
This clear glass deck light or deck prism was recovered from Plymouth Sound.
This object would be used to provide light below decks in a wooden ship using a method that was safer than using candles. The prism would have been fitted into the deck of a ship with the flat side uppermost at deck level. Light would pass through the flat side and shine through to the deck below, diffused in all directions by the patterned glass. The flat surface of the deck light shows abrasion and wear from sailors walking on it when it was fitted into the deck.
