About the Liberty 70 Project
The Liberty 70 Project was started in 2010 by a group of sports divers with an interest in the wreck of the James Eagan Layne. The wreck is well known but her real story is not so there was an opportunity to tell this story in a book and on a web site.
Recent changes to the wreck suggested that she was rapidly collapsing and may not remain standing for much longer, so if the wreck were to be recorded then it would have to happen soon. In addition, the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the James Eagan Layne in 2015 gave us a date to aim to complete the the project.
- The aim of the project is to research and document the history and remains of the Liberty ship James Eagan Layne.
- This will be done by:

Researching and documenting the history of the ship

Creating a detailed plan of the wreck site

Creating a detailed 3D digital model of the wreck

Recording stories about the ship and divers visits to it

Recording finds recovered from the ship

Collect photographs, video and film of the wreck

Investigate the marine life that now lives in and around the wreck
The results of this work will be published on this web site, in a book and as a series of academic papers, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the loss of the James Eagan Layne in 2015.
