Liberty 70 Dummy Cartridge (11A14)

This dummy or practice cartridge was found in the stern of the James Eagan Layne. It was used to practice handling ammunition and practice loading and unloading the 5in stern gun.

The cartridge is made of five wooden staves and two steel endcaps held together with a steel rod running through the centre. The timber has been eroded away in places and is still degrading.

A similar but intact dummy cartridge from a 5in gun is shown below.
