Project List

A number of smaller projects have been started which are co-ordinated by the SHIPS Project. These smaller projects include diving projects where shipwreck sites are investigated by divers, recording projects that gather information, projects run by students at the University of Plymouth and research projects recording information in books and archives.

The Project web site is used to publish the results of the smaller projects, to help exchange information between different groups and to help find resources to get each project completed.

• 1000 Tyres Project

Our first environmental project - helping clean up Plymouth Sound by removing dumped tyres and other junk.

• The Stray Finds Project

Recording, photographing and drawing objects recovered from Plymouth Sound, with the information published on the Finds pages.

• Foreshore Hulks

Locating, recording and identifying the many abandoned ships or hulks around Plymouth Sound and its estuaries.

• Investigation of Royal Navy 36 gun frigate Amethyst
• Archaeological investigation of HM Submarine A7 [PUBLISHED]
• The Liberty70 Project : Recording and mapping the James Eagan Layne
• The Jennycliff Wall Project: Survey, mapping and identification of the Jennycliff Wall
• Identifying geophysical targets in and around Plymouth Sound (with Plymouth University)
• Survey the remains of the Poulmic (for the NAS Adopt-a-Wreck scheme)
• The Roman River Crossing Project, near Calstock, Cornwall [COMPLETED]
• The search for the 'submarine' Maria lost in Plymouth Sound in 1774

Fieldwork is undertaken with the help of local volunteers, students from the universities at Plymouth, Bristol and Oxford, Nautical Archaeology Society members and local dive clubs.

• Collaboration Projects
• Research and recording of the Mewstone Ledge Cannon Site (with Totnes BSAC)
• Geophysical survey of the Coronation (1691) off Penlee Point (with the Coronation Project team)
• Recording the SS Rosehill in Whitsand Bay (with Totnes BSAC for the NAS Adopt-a-Wreck scheme)
• Survey of the yacht Glen Strathallan (with Aquanauts for the NAS Adopt-a-Wreck scheme)

• Mount Edgcumbe House Museum - Metta Catharina Exhibit [COMPLETED]

Supporting the creation and development of a museum exhibition and archive for the Metta Catharina wreck.

• Anchors

Recording anchors on land and underwater for the BigAnchorProject.

• Adopting Archives

Collecting unwanted research papers, documents and photographs about sites in Plymouth and elsewhere. The archives are scanned then the original documents and photographs are depositied with an appropriate museum or institution.

• Early Trade in the South-West

Research into the early trade in tin and other metals in South Devon and Cornwall.

• The Liberty 70 Project, the story of the S.S.James Eagan Layne

The story of the life and loss of the liberty ship S.S. James Eagan Layne and her subsequent use as a dive site. For the Liberty 70 Project.

• The loss of the Royal Navy ships in and around Plymouth

Research into the loss of HMS Pallas (1798), HMS Amethyst (1811), HMS Fearless (1804) etc.

• Technology Projects
• Marine Magnetometers in Archaeology (with CISMAS, Geosa and Marine Magnetics)
• Seabed Mapping with Multibeam Echo Sounders (with Swathe Services and Plymouth University)
• Subsea positioning for shipwreck mapping (with Sonardyne International Ltd.)
• The use of autonomous vehicles for maritime archaeology (with MSubs Ltd.)
